The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has directed all personnel of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) to refrain from engaging in unauthorized social media activities that are capable of undermining the integrity, professionalism, and public image of the Force.

CSP Anietie Okokon Edem Iniedu, the Force spokesperson, in a statement on Tuesday, said the directive follows growing concerns over the increasing trend of police officers creating and publishing videos, conducting live social media sessions, and engaging in other online activities while in uniform or in circumstances that clearly identify them as members of the Nigeria Police Force without official approval.

According to the statement, the IGP noted that although social media serves as an important platform for communication and public engagement, officers and men of the Nigeria Police Force must use it responsibly and in strict accordance with existing laws, regulations, and the Force’s Social Media Policy.

He stressed that officers are prohibited from creating or sharing unauthorized content in police uniform, commenting publicly on official police matters, disclosing sensitive operational information, or using their status as police personnel for personal promotion, entertainment, or commercial purposes.

To ensure compliance, Commissioners of Police, Heads of Departments, Commanders, and other supervisory officers have been directed to immediately sensitize personnel under their commands and enforce strict adherence to the directive.

The IGP warned that supervisory officers would be held accountable for any failure to address violations within their jurisdictions.

The Inspector-General also instructed the Force Intelligence Department (FID) and the Professional Standards Department (X-Squad) to intensify monitoring of social media platforms and identify officers whose online activities fall short of the professional standards expected of members of the Force.

The NPF reaffirmed its commitment to discipline, professionalism, and responsible public communication, assuring citizens of its continued dedication to maintaining public trust and preserving the institution’s integrity.
