Musa Na Allah, Sokoto
The Labour Party (LP) in Sokoto State has formally launched its preparations for the 2027 general elections with the successful conduct of its party primaries, producing candidates for the governorship, National Assembly and State House of Assembly seats through a consensus process widely endorsed by party stakeholders.
The exercise, conducted on Saturday under the supervision of the party’s Primaries Electoral Committee, was described by party leaders as peaceful, transparent and reflective of the collective aspirations of members across the state.
At the conclusion of the exercise, Comrade Aminu Umar Ahmad emerged as the party’s governorship candidate, while candidates were also selected for the three senatorial districts, 11 House of Representatives constituencies and 30 State House of Assembly seats.
Speaking after the primaries, Chairman of the Primaries Electoral Committee, Engr. Elder Julius Inedu, said the process complied fully with the party’s constitution, electoral guidelines and relevant provisions of the Electoral Act.
According to him, the consensus model adopted by stakeholders strengthened party cohesion and demonstrated the Labour Party’s commitment to internal democracy.
“The Labour Party in Sokoto State has demonstrated its commitment to internal democracy, unity and peaceful political engagement. The consensus arrangement adopted by stakeholders has strengthened the party and positioned us for the task ahead,” Inedu stated.
He explained that the emergence of candidates followed extensive consultations involving delegates, aspirants and party leaders from across the state, ensuring broad-based participation and acceptance.
“We are satisfied with the level of cooperation shown by aspirants, delegates and stakeholders. The process was peaceful and devoid of rancour, which is a positive signal for the future of the party in Sokoto State,” he added.
Also speaking, Secretary of the Primaries Electoral Committee, Comrade Abdullahi Bello, described the exercise as a reflection of the party’s growing influence and expanding support base in Sokoto State.
“Our members have shown remarkable maturity and discipline throughout the exercise. We are now focused on building a stronger party structure and mobilising support ahead of the 2027 general elections,” Bello said.
Party officials disclosed that stakeholders unanimously endorsed the consensus arrangement and pledged to work together to strengthen the party’s grassroots presence across the state.
The successful primaries come as the Labour Party seeks to build on the momentum generated by its performance in the 2023 general elections, which significantly increased its national visibility and political relevance.
Political analysts believe the development could further reshape the political landscape in Sokoto, where the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have traditionally dominated electoral contests.
Labour Party leaders said their campaign agenda for 2027 would centre on accountability, transparent governance, economic empowerment and inclusive development aimed at improving the living conditions of citizens.
With the nomination process concluded, the party is expected to intensify grassroots mobilisation, voter engagement and strategic campaign activities as it positions itself as a formidable contender in the race for political power in Sokoto State.
The party expressed confidence in the capacity of its candidates to provide credible leadership and effective representation, reaffirming its commitment to democratic values and the socio-economic advancement of the people of the state.
