The Nigerian Senate has dismissed as “false and reckless” allegations that its leadership received $10 million to block the confirmation of Mr. Abdullahi Garba Ramat as Chairman of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC).

The allegation, made by Alwan Hassan, a former aide to ex–Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, claimed that Senate leaders were bribed to halt Ramat’s appointment.

Reacting on Friday night, Senate spokesperson Senator Yemi Adaramodu described the claim as baseless, saying the suspension of Ramat’s screening was based solely on numerous petitions and public concerns surrounding his nomination.

“The decision to step down Mr. Ramat’s screening was purely guided by public outcry and complaints against his nomination,” Adaramodu stated. “This is not the first time the Senate has taken such a step in response to public sentiment.”

He accused Hassan of acting as “a hired hand” bent on blackmailing the legislature, adding that the Senate would not allow itself to be smeared by unfounded accusations.

“The Senate will not be intimidated by political mercenaries or satanic fabrications,” Adaramodu said. “Mr. Ramat carries a baggage of complaints, and the Senate must act responsibly when such issues arise.”

The Senate spokesperson further disclosed that the legislature would initiate legal proceedings against Hassan to compel him to provide evidence for his bribery claim.

“No one can tarnish the image of the National Assembly with baseless allegations. We will meet him in court,” he declared.

Reaffirming its commitment to due process and transparency, the Senate assured Nigerians that every nominee would undergo a thorough and credible confirmation exercise.
