Niger State Governor, Mohammed Umaru Bago, has announced that his administration has earmarked 20,000 hectares of land to boost sugar production as part of efforts to transform agriculture and position the state as Nigeria’s food powerhouse.

Governor Bago made this known in Minna when he received a delegation led by the Chairman of Flour Mills of Nigeria, Mr. John Coumantaros, alongside foreign investors from Brazil, the United States, and South Africa.

The investors were in the state to explore agricultural opportunities and discuss partnership prospects with the government.

During a tour of Tagwai Dam and the Tagwai Feedlots, the governor outlined his administration’s strategic roadmap for agricultural expansion, noting that the sugar initiative is part of a broader plan to achieve national food security.

“This collaboration will redefine the future of agriculture in Nigeria. We are building a value-driven agricultural system that enhances production, processing, and export,” Governor Bago said.

He revealed plans to scale up seed production in the state, describing access to quality seeds as one of the major challenges hindering productivity among Nigerian farmers.

The Governor also disclosed that discussions with Brazilian partners include developing large-scale animal pasture to support livestock, improve dairy production, and enhance animal genetics.

He added that abattoirs in the state would soon be upgraded from traditional meat processing to modern frozen meat packaging.

Reaffirming his commitment to agricultural development, Governor Bago said Niger State would fully utilise its abundant water resources, including dams and rivers, to support year-round farming.

In his remarks, FMN Chairman John Coumantaros praised Governor Bago’s leadership and agricultural vision.

“Governor Bago is a transformational leader. His passion for agribusiness is changing the landscape of agriculture in Nigeria,” he said.

Coumantaros added that the partnership would uplift rural farmers, create jobs, and enhance the agricultural value chain, especially in sugar production and seed development.

Other members of the visiting delegation also expressed their readiness to support Niger State’s agricultural revolution and contribute to achieving the governor’s development agenda.
