Portugal has summoned Guinea-Bissau’s ambassador in Lisbon after authorities in Bissau abruptly expelled journalists from Portugal’s Lusa news agency and two African affiliates of public broadcaster RTP.
The order, issued Friday, gave the reporters until August 19 to leave the country. Neither government has provided an explanation.
The expulsions come as Guinea-Bissau prepares for delayed presidential and legislative elections, now set for November 23, amid heightened political tension.
President Umaro Sissoco Embalo, a former army general, has faced mounting criticism after announcing he would seek a second term—reversing earlier pledges to step aside.
Opposition leaders argue his mandate expired in February, fueling fears of instability in the coup-prone nation.
On August 7, Embalo appointed Braima Camara as prime minister, his third since taking office in 2020.
Earlier this year, an ECOWAS mediation mission withdrew after accusing Embalo of threatening to expel its team.
