Kano State Police Command has announced sweeping security and movement restrictions ahead of Saturday’s re-run election for Ghari/Tsanyawa State Constituency and the by-election for Bagwai/Shanono State Constituency.
The Command’s spokesperson, SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, in a statement on Thursday, quoted the Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, as saying the measures, put in place in collaboration with other security agencies, are aimed at ensuring a peaceful, free, fair, transparent, and hitch-free exercise on 15 August 2025.
According to the statement, under the new directives, the movement of motor vehicles, tricycles, and motorcycles within the four affected Local Government Areas, Ghari, Tsanyawa, Bagwai, and Shanono, will be strictly restricted from midnight on Friday, 15 August 2025, until 6:00 p.m. on Election Day.
Exemptions apply only to vehicles on essential duties such as ambulances, fire service trucks, and those belonging to electoral officials and accredited observers.
The Command also warned that only eligible voters and INEC-accredited agents will be allowed at polling units, possession of weapons of any kind is prohibited, wearing or carrying items bearing political party logos or symbols will not be allowed at polling units, and loitering in or around voting areas will not be tolerated.
“State security outfits, including vigilante groups and KAROTA personnel, will be barred from polling stations,” the statement added.
CP Bakori reassured the public of the police’s neutrality and professionalism throughout the process, urging residents to cooperate with law enforcement.
“Our officers will remain apolitical, impartial, professional, and civil in discharging their duties.
“We call on all residents and visitors in the affected LGAs to fully comply with these directives to ensure a smooth and peaceful electoral process,” he said.
