Brazilian side Fluminense pulled off a major upset with a 2-0 victory over Inter Milan to book their place in the Club World Cup quarter-finals, where they will face Saudi club Al-Hilal—who eliminated Manchester City.
German Cano gave Fluminense a dream start, scoring a stooping header in the third minute. Despite sustained pressure from Inter, substitute Hercules sealed the win late in the second half with a superb curling strike from the edge of the box.
Inter Milan created several chances to level the match, with Lautaro Martinez striking the post and Federico Dimarco narrowly missing from two free-kicks and a tight-angle shot. Stefan de Vrij also came close after a smart assist from Martinez, but Fluminense held firm.
The match, held at the 74,867-capacity Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, drew a modest crowd of 20,030 for its final game at the venue.
Fluminense now join fellow Brazilian club Palmeiras in the quarter-finals and will take on Al-Hilal on Friday at the Camping World Stadium in Orlando.
