The International Human Rights Commission–Relief Fund Trust (IHRC-RFT) Nigeria has strongly condemned the mob killing of Malama Ummulkhairi in Mararraban Jos, Igabi Local Government Area of Kaduna State, describing the incident as a tragic violation of human rights and a dangerous attack on the rule of law.

A statement issued on Wednesday by the Country Director of IHRC-RFT, Amb. Abdullahi Bakoji Adamu expressed deep sorrow over the killing, which reportedly followed allegations made against the victim without any lawful investigation or trial by a competent court.

The statement said the incident highlights the growing threat posed by mob justice, warning that no individual or group has the authority to investigate, judge, and impose punishment outside the legal framework established by the Constitution and the courts.

According to theIHRC-RFT, the right to life remains one of the most fundamental rights guaranteed under Nigeria’s Constitution and international human rights instruments. It noted that every citizen is entitled to legal protection and a fair hearing, regardless of the allegations levelled against them.

IHRC-RFT stressed that only a court of competent jurisdiction has the power to determine guilt and impose punishment, adding that the killing of Ummulkhairi amounted to a gross violation of her constitutional rights to life, dignity, and fair hearing.

The human rights body expressed concern over what it described as a growing trend in which rumours, suspicions, and unverified accusations lead to violent attacks and loss of lives across the country.

It warned that mob justice threatens public peace, social cohesion, and confidence in the justice system.

While commending security agencies for arresting some suspects linked to the incident, the commission called on the Nigeria Police Force and other relevant authorities to conduct a thorough, impartial, and transparent investigation to identify all those involved in the killing.

It further urged prosecuting authorities to ensure that anyone found culpable is brought before the courts and made to face the full weight of the law, regardless of ethnic, religious, or social affiliations.

The IHRC-RFT also appealed to religious leaders, traditional rulers, civil society groups, media practitioners, and members of the public to intensify campaigns promoting respect for human rights, due process, and the rule of law.

“Justice for Malama Ummulkhairi is not only a matter for her family; it is a matter of public interest and societal responsibility,” the statement said, warning that failure to hold perpetrators accountable could encourage further acts of mob violence.

IHRC-RFT extended its condolences to the family and loved ones of the deceased and pledged to continue monitoring the case to ensure justice is served.
