Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has cleared over ₦16 billion in pension arrears in less than two years, providing relief to thousands of retirees.
Governor Yusuf, represented by Deputy Governor, Comrade Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, announced this achievement during the 12th Quadrennial National Delegates Conference of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP) at the Kano Government House.
He also announced that the state’s minimum pension has been increased from ₦5,000 to ₦20,000 to enhance retirees’ welfare.
Other reforms include ensuring timely monthly payments, stopping arbitrary deductions, and resolving property disputes involving the Pension Fund Trustees, with proceeds from sold properties returned to the fund.
At the same event, Niger State Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago praised pensioners for their service and promised reforms, including the creation of “NUP Farms” to support post-retirement livelihoods and food security. Bago also donated ₦100 million to the conference, matching Kano State’s contribution.
