The importance of public perception in governance has once again been underscored, as stakeholders highlight the need for integrity, capacity, and accountability in public service to strengthen citizens’ confidence in government institutions.

Observers note that effective service delivery depends largely on the quality of individuals entrusted with public responsibilities, stressing that only competent and ethical leaders can make government policies and programs credible and impactful to the masses.

In Kano State, the administration of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has been commended for adopting a new approach to governance by prioritizing merit, inclusiveness, and service delivery over conventional political considerations.

The governor’s leadership style, described as people-oriented and anchored on servant leadership principles, is said to have redefined governance in the state by incorporating professionals and civil society actors into key positions.

Analysts say this shift has contributed to improved policy development, program implementation, and overall public service delivery.

A major highlight of the administration’s strategy is the deliberate engagement of Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) in governance processes.

This collaboration has strengthened democratic practices through policy advocacy, joint initiatives, and constructive feedback mechanisms between government and citizens.

The Ministry of Information and Internal Affairs, under the leadership of Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, has been instrumental in fostering this engagement.

The ministry has facilitated structured dialogue platforms, including the state’s first-ever CSOs conference, as well as regular consultations on critical issues such as voter education, insecurity, and the prevention of violent extremism.

Stakeholders note that these partnerships have enhanced community engagement, improved emergency response strategies, and promoted inclusive governance across the state.

Similarly, the Ministry of Public Procurement and Project Monitoring, led by Nura Iro Maaji, has been recognised for strengthening transparency and accountability.

Through collaboration with CSOs, the ministry has improved monitoring and evaluation of government projects, ensuring quality service delivery and prudent use of public resources.

Civil society groups also point to ongoing efforts to address regulatory challenges affecting community-based organisations, with expectations that reforms will enhance access to funding and operational efficiency.

Experts maintain that such collaboration aligns with global best practices, including frameworks like the Open Government Partnership, which promotes transparency, accountability, and citizen participation in governance.

They emphasise that civil society plays a critical role in bridging gaps in public service delivery, particularly in sectors such as healthcare, education, peacebuilding, and social welfare, while also strengthening democratic institutions through oversight and advocacy.

Stakeholders have therefore commended Governor Yusuf for his inclusive governance model, noting that his administration’s openness to civil society engagement is fostering sustainable development, promoting accountability, and enhancing peace and security in Kano State.
