Traders at Singa Market in Kano were thrown into panic on Saturday after a fresh fire outbreak engulfed several shops at Gidan Gilas, popularly known as “Gidan Mai,” destroying goods worth millions of naira.

Eyewitnesses said the blaze started from a provision shop, sending thick black smoke into the sky.

Traders made frantic efforts to salvage their goods and prevent the fire from spreading to nearby buildings, but the intensity of the flames made it difficult to contain.

Onlookers reported that the fire spread rapidly to adjoining structures, heightening fear among traders and shoppers in the busy commercial hub.

Officials of the Kano State Fire Service responded promptly with a fire truck.

However, firefighters initially ran out of water while battling the raging inferno, prompting the arrival of another truck to reinforce the operation.

To support the efforts of the Fire Service, a private water tanker from Aspira Nigeria Limited joined the firefighting efforts.

Despite this intervention, traders and residents called for additional water tankers to prevent further damage.

The incident comes just weeks after a similar devastating fire at Singa Market that inflicted heavy losses on traders, worsening the challenges faced by business owners in the area.

As of the time of filing this report, the cause of the fire had yet to be determined, and authorities have not confirmed what triggered the incident.
