The International Human Rights Commission – Relief Fund Trust (IHRC-RFT), Nigeria Chapter, has urged the Nigeria Police Force to strictly enforce the Inspector-General of Police’s (IGP) directive against illegal payments for bail.

The organisation commended the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Rilwan Disu, for warning that police officers who demand or receive illegal bail payments, as well as individuals who offer such payments, could face prosecution.

In a statement issued on Sunday by its Country Director, Amb. Abdullahi Bakoji Adamu, IHRC-RFT expressed concern over reports and public complaints alleging that some police personnel continue to demand money before releasing suspects.

The organisation said such alleged practices sometimes result in unnecessary delays or threats of additional charges against individuals unable to pay, adding that the allegations require proper investigation and accountability.

It stressed that bail should not be used as a means of unlawful financial exploitation or become an obstacle to access to justice.

IHRC-RFT called on the police authorities to ensure that the IGP’s directive is effectively implemented, warning that failure to address illegal bail payments could undermine public confidence in law enforcement.

The organisation also pledged its support for efforts to ensure that the directive achieves its intended purpose of protecting citizens’ rights and promoting accountability within the police force.

It urged members of the public to report any police officer demanding money for bail to the appropriate authorities and IHRC-RFT for follow-up and lawful intervention.

The commission reaffirmed its commitment to promoting human rights, strengthening police accountability and building public trust in law enforcement.
