The Kano State House of Assembly has commenced deliberations on a bill seeking to amend the law establishing the state’s Sharia Courts and the Sharia Court of Appeal.
The proposed amendment aims to resolve overlapping jurisdictions between the Sharia courts and magistrate courts, which lawmakers say have caused confusion in the administration of justice.
Presenting the bill, the Deputy Speaker and member representing Rimin Gado Constituency, Muhammad Bello Butu-Butu, said the law needs to be updated to reflect current judicial realities and ensure smoother court operations.
He noted that since the creation of the Sharia Courts in 2000, several provisions of the existing law have become inadequate, necessitating reform.
“We must amend the law to clearly define the jurisdictions of the Sharia Courts and the magistrate courts to prevent future conflicts or misunderstandings,” Butu-Butu said.
