Senator Ali Ndume has warned that Nigeria could face serious diplomatic consequences if the Federal Government fails to urgently address growing tensions with the United States.

The former Senate Leader said recent statements by a U.S. lawmaker and former President Donald Trump should not be ignored, urging the government to engage Washington immediately to prevent further damage to bilateral relations.

Ndume criticised the Nigerian authorities for not treating with urgency the “Christian genocide” allegation earlier raised by U.S. congressman Riley Moore, which he said contributed to Trump’s decision to list Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern.”

“I have alerted the government and even moved a motion. Nigeria is a sovereign state, but this issue is about perception and the ripple effects of being classified as a country of concern,” Ndume stated.

He insisted that Nigeria must respond with facts and figures, noting that violence in the country affects people of all faiths, not just Christians.

“Muslims have also been victims.

“The crisis is not a religious war but a national tragedy affecting everyone.

“The U.S. should be properly briefed on the true situation,” he said.

To tackle the diplomatic fallout, Ndume called on the Presidency to assemble experienced diplomats and foreign policy experts such as Chief Emeka Anyaoku, Professor Bolaji Akinyemi, Babagana Kingibe, Professor Sulu Gambari, and Amina Mohammed to lead discussions with Washington and international partners.

“Before things spiral out of control, Nigeria should deploy its best diplomatic minds and engage both the U.S. government and the United Nations.

“The U.S. Embassy in Abuja must also be part of the dialogue,” he advised.

Ndume expressed optimism that Nigeria can still correct the wrong impression and strengthen cooperation with the U.S., particularly in the fight against terrorism.

His comments come after Trump’s recent statement naming Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern,” a move analysts warn could negatively impact Nigeria’s security and diplomatic relations with the U.S. if left unaddressed.
