The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has announced plans to prosecute one Mr. Alkazim Kabir, also known as Abbati Kabiru Abuwa, a self-acclaimed journalist based in Kano, for alleged involvement in a ₦14 million fraud scheme.

In a statement issued on Wednesday by its spokesperson, Demola Bakare, the Commission said the decision followed multiple petitions accusing Kabir of impersonation, deceit, and obtaining money under false pretences.

According to the ICPC, investigations revealed that the suspect had allegedly posed as top government officials including aides to the President, Vice President, and lawmakers to defraud unsuspecting victims.

“In one instance, he obtained $3,300 and 1,620 Saudi Riyals from two victims by falsely claiming to be an aide to the Presidency,” the statement said.

The Commission added that Kabir often exploited religious travel opportunities to perpetrate fraud.

During a trip to Mecca, Saudi Arabia, he reportedly borrowed 11,000 Saudi Riyals from a fellow traveler and later sent a forged bank receipt as evidence of repayment.

In another case, he allegedly issued a fake transfer receipt of ₦3.2 million to a travel agent who had arranged his flights, accommodation, and train tickets.

ICPC said charges had already been filed against the suspect, and he would soon be arraigned before a competent court as soon as the case is assigned.

The Commission reaffirmed its commitment to curbing impersonation, financial crimes, and all forms of corruption through diligent investigation and prosecution.
