The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has emerged victorious in the Bagwai/Shanono state constituency by-election, further consolidating its dominance in the Kano State House of Assembly.
Declaring the result on Sunday, Returning Officer Hassan Adamu Shitu announced Ali Hassan Kiyawa of the NNPP as winner with 16,198 votes, defeating Ahmad Muhammad Kadamu of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who polled 5,347 votes.
The election was held to fill the vacancy created by the death of APC lawmaker Halilu Ibrahim Kundila in April 2024. The outcome increases NNPP’s majority in the 40-member assembly to 26 seats, while APC holds 14.
The APC has, however, rejected the results, with its National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, alleging electoral violence and disruptions by armed gangs in parts of Shanono, Bagwai, and Ghari.
In response, Kano Resident Electoral Commissioner, Audu Zango, disclosed that security agencies arrested more than 100 suspected political thugs during the exercise.
Reacting to the APC’s claims, NNPP spokesman Ladipo Johnson dismissed the allegations as unfounded, insisting that the poll was peaceful, credible, and reflective of the party’s strength in Kano politics.
