The Nigeria-Morocco gas pipeline project has taken another major step forward, as stakeholders ramp up efforts toward full implementation of the $25 billion initiative.

Designed to transport natural gas from Nigeria through Morocco and ultimately to Europe, the ambitious 5,660-kilometre pipeline will traverse 13 West African countries, offering a significant boost to regional energy integration and trade.

This week, the project gained renewed momentum with high-level technical and steering committee meetings held in Rabat, Morocco, on July 10–11.

The sessions brought together senior executives from national oil companies across West Africa, as well as officials from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), to evaluate progress and align on next steps.

The meetings were coordinated by Morocco’s National Office of Hydrocarbons and Mines (ONHYM), underscoring the country’s strong commitment to the transcontinental project.

Key milestones have already been reached, including the completion of feasibility and front-end engineering studies.

In May, critical agreements were signed, laying the groundwork for the creation of a special-purpose vehicle and setting the stage for a final investment decision expected by the end of 2025.

Morocco’s Minister of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development, Leila Benali, highlighted these advancements during a recent briefing to the country’s Council of Advisors, reaffirming the strategic importance of the pipeline for Africa and beyond.
