Army Urges Unity, Patriotism, National Service As It Marks 162 Years

The General Officer Commanding (GOC), 8 Division of the Nigerian Army, has called on Nigerians to support the military’s efforts in safeguarding the nation and promoting unity, peace, and development.

Speaking during a public sensitization program held at Yahaya Abdulkarim Model Primary and Secondary School in Sokoto on Tuesday, the GOC, Maj.-Gen. Godwin Ajose represented by Brig. Gen. Aliyu Musasaid the Nigerian Army offers a wide range of career opportunities for both professionals and non-professionals to serve the nation.

He emphasized that the military remains committed to recruiting eligible individuals from all parts of the country, irrespective of background, and providing them with the necessary training to become defenders of Nigeria’s sovereignty.

Reflecting on the Army’s evolution over its 162-year history, Ajose described the institution as a symbol of national pride, resilience, and professionalism.

He stressed that the Nigerian Army would continue to be a cornerstone of the country’s security architecture.

The GOC reiterated the Army’s dedication to defending Nigeria’s territorial integrity, promoting peace, and upholding the rights of every citizen.

He reaffirmed that the fight against terrorism and insurgency remains a top priority.

“Our mission is defend the nation, root out terrorism, and uphold the peace and security that every Nigerian deserves.

“Our strategies are focused, and our commitment is unwavering,” Ajose declared.

Highlighting the ongoing Nigerian Army Day Celebration (NADCEL) 2025, Ajose noted that this year’s commemoration includes Jumu’at prayers, interdenominational services, and a series of symbolic and community focused events held across military formations nationwide.

“These celebrations are not just ceremonial they are moments of reflection, thanksgiving, and recommitment to service.

“We honor our fallen heroes, our serving personnel, and the unity that binds us,” he added.

Also speaking at the event, Lt. Col. Nuhu Yahaya, Acting Director of Education Services, 8 Division, provided an overview of the recruitment criteria for both commissioned and non-commissioned officers.

He discussed training durations, artisan roles, and the operational structure of various military units.

He encouraged students to consider a future in the Army, noting that military service is not just a career it’s a patriotic duty and a path toward national development.

In her remarks, the Principal of the school, Hajia Murjanatu Muhammad, along with the Head Teacher, Hajia Lubabatu Musa, expressed appreciation to the Nigerian Army for organizing the impactful event.

They noted that the exposure would leave a lasting impression on the students and potentially inspire future service members.

In a separate but related event, the Chairperson of the Nigerian Army Officers’ Wives Association (NAOWA) 8 Division, Mrs. Meg Ndidi Ajose, paid tribute to military spouses, describing them as the unseen strength behind the uniform.

She passionately stated, “The strength behind the uniform is a woman. We are the caregivers, the moral compass, the voices of peace.

“We bridge the gap between the barracks and civilian life. We nurture, we educate, and we heal.”

Mrs. Ajose highlighted the roles of women in promoting community hygiene, education, and moral values, emphasizing that women continue to be the backbone of both military families and Nigerian society.
