A wedding in Gamadan village, Kura Local Government Area of Kano State, has drawn public attention after a groom, Mustapha, presented a pair of eyeglasses worth N1,500 as dowry.
The ceremony was modest, attended by just five people: the bride, groom, an Imam, and one representative from each family.
Despite its simplicity, the marriage sparked controversy and led to the couple being arraigned before a Magistrate Court in Kura, presided over by Justice Muhammad Isah.
Speaking to local radio station Dala FM, Mustapha defended the union, saying they consulted several Islamic clerics before proceeding.
“Two clerics said it wasn’t valid, but another approved it since the bride’s representative accepted the dowry,” he explained. He also urged young people to trust in divine destiny, adding, “Everyone has their fate, and no one can change what God has planned.”
This case is similar to a recent incident in Garun Malam, where a groom used a N5,000 mobile phone as dowry. In that instance, a Sharia court sentenced the couple to one month of community service—assigning the groom to sweep a central mosque and the bride to clean a Quranic school.
