Sony’s latest Spider-Man adventure, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, has crossed the $2 billion mark at the global box office after just three weekends in cinemas.
The film, starring Tom Holland as Marvel’s iconic web-slinger, has earned $785 million in North America and $1.23 billion internationally, bringing its worldwide total to $2.022 billion.
The milestone places Brand New Day among an elite group of only eight films in history to surpass $2 billion in global ticket sales.
The movie joins blockbusters including Avatar, which grossed $2.9 billion; Avengers: Endgame ($2.7 billion); Avatar: The Way of Water ($2.3 billion); Titanic ($2.2 billion); Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($2.07 billion); and Avengers: Infinity War ($2.03 billion).
The previous Spider-Man film, Spider-Man: No Way Home, came close to the benchmark with $1.9 billion but fell short, partly because it did not receive a theatrical release in China.
Brand New Day is also the second-fastest film ever to reach the $2 billion milestone, achieving the feat behind Avengers: Endgame, which crossed the threshold just 11 days after its release.
The film has exceeded expectations since its release in late July. It is Holland’s fourth solo outing as Peter Parker and opened with a record $355 million in North America and $932 million worldwide.
The movie subsequently crossed the $1 billion global mark just six days after hitting cinemas.
With its strong performance and continued audience interest, Brand New Day is already the eighth-highest-grossing film in global box office history.
Industry analysts are now watching closely to see how far the blockbuster can go, with projections suggesting it could challenge the $1 billion domestic mark.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens currently holds the North American record at $936 million.
There is also growing speculation that Spider-Man: Brand New Day could become the first film in history to surpass $3 billion in worldwide box office revenue.
