Kano State Government has officially flagged off a symbolic campaign for the April 2026 polio immunization exercise.
Speaking during a press briefing at the Emergency Operations Centre (EOC), the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Abubakar Labaran Yusuf, revealed that only three cases of polio were recorded in Kano State last year.
He described this as a significant achievement for the state’s health sector.
Dr. Yusuf stated that this year’s campaign targets children aged 0 to 59 months, emphasizing the government’s commitment to protecting young children from the disease.
He further disclosed that the Ministry of Health has deployed over 7,000 healthcare workers to carry out the immunisation exercise across all 44 local government areas of the state.
The Commissioner commended the efforts of the state government under the leadership of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for its continuous support to the health sector.
He also urged parents, caregivers, and the general public to cooperate fully with vaccination teams to ensure that every eligible child is immunised.
According to him, all stakeholders have a critical role to play in eradicating polio.
Dr. Yusuf acknowledged the contributions of individuals and organisations in the fight against the polio virus. However, he noted that traces of the disease still exist in some areas, stressing the need for sustained collective efforts to completely eliminate it.
The campaign is part of the government’s commitment, in collaboration with development partners, to end polio in Kano State.
