Kano State Ministry of Health has announced the establishment of a special unit dedicated to promoting the health and well-being of adolescents, particularly young girls, with a focus on menstrual health management.
The Commissioner for Health, Dr. Abubakar Labaran Yusuf, disclosed this while speaking to journalists in commemoration of World Menstrual Hygiene Day, observed annually on May 28.
Dr. Yusuf explained that the day is set aside to raise awareness among women and girls on proper menstrual hygiene practices.
He emphasized that the Kano State Government remains deeply committed to improving the health of women and children across the state.
He further noted that many girls face stigma, fear, and emotional distress during their menstrual periods.
the Ministry is working closely with non-governmental organizations, school authorities, and other stakeholders to educate girls on safe and healthy menstrual practices.
Some women, however, have called for the introduction of menstrual leave, particularly for working women and students, to help them better manage the challenges associated with their periods.
World Menstrual Hygiene Day was designated by the United Nations and is observed every year on May 28. The theme for this year is “Together for a Period-Friendly World.”
