Former Kaduna State Governor Ahmed Makarfi has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to declare a national emergency on insecurity as part of efforts to address the worsening security challenges across the country.
Speaking during an interaction with journalists in Kaduna on Sunday, Makarfi described the current security situation as alarming, warning that it was approaching a state of war in several parts of the country.
The former governor said the growing scale and complexity of security threats required urgent and coordinated action by both the federal and state governments.
“The reality is that the security challenges on the ground are expanding. Rather than criticising, my position is to offer advice,” he said.
According to Makarfi, the President should work closely with state governments to make security the foremost priority of governance.
“President Tinubu, in collaboration with state governments, should declare a national emergency on security.
“Governance should be restructured in such a way that security becomes the number one, two and three priority in all its dimensions,” he stated.
Makarfi, who also served as National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), expressed opposition to any move to deregister political parties ahead of the 2027 general elections.
He argued that political parties that have complied with the guidelines and requirements of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) should be allowed to participate in the electoral process.
The former governor maintained that preserving political plurality and ensuring a level playing field for all qualified parties were essential to strengthening Nigeria’s democratic system.
