The President of the ECOWAS Commission, Dr. Omar Alieu Touray, has reaffirmed the regional bloc’s commitment to West African unity and integration, congratulating the government and people of the Republic of Benin on the country’s 66th Independence Anniversary.

In what is regarded as one of his final symbolic messages before leaving office, Touray described Benin as a key pillar of regional integration, democracy and peace, commending its enduring contributions to the vision and objectives of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

In his independence message, the ECOWAS Commission President praised the resilience and patriotism of the Beninese people and reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to strengthening collaboration with the country in promoting peace, security, economic integration and sustainable development across the sub-region.

He stressed that the future of West Africa depends on stronger solidarity among member states, noting that regional cooperation remains critical to addressing insecurity, stimulating economic growth and improving the wellbeing of citizens.

Touray’s message comes as he prepares to conclude his tenure as President of the ECOWAS Commission, giving the tribute added significance as a reaffirmation of the longstanding partnership between the regional body and one of its founding member states.

The Commission noted that Benin has consistently played an active role in strengthening regional institutions, promoting democratic governance and advancing the free movement of people, goods and services within the Community.

As Benin celebrated 66 years of independence, ECOWAS reiterated its resolve to continue working closely with the country’s authorities and people to build a more integrated, peaceful and prosperous West Africa.

The message comes at a time when the regional bloc is seeking to reinforce unity among member states amid evolving political, economic and security challenges confronting the sub-region.
