The Centre for Human Rights and Social Advancement (CEFSAN) has condemned the reported attack on human rights activist and journalist, Omoyele Sowore, and members of his entourage in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State, demanding an independent investigation and prosecution of those responsible.
It described the 30 October 2026 incident as an assault on democratic freedoms, fundamental human rights and citizens’ right to express dissent.
According to CEFSAN, Sowore and members of his team were attacked by armed men at Tawakalitu Restaurant in the Dalimore area of Ado-Ekiti, shortly after his appearance on MIDAS FM.
The attackers reportedly used firearms, sticks and broken bottles to assault members of the team, while some victims were dispossessed of their personal belongings.
In a statement issued in Kano on Tuesday, CEFSAN’s Executive Director, Yusha’u Sani Yankuzo, said the incident reflected a disturbing culture of political intimidation and violence aimed at silencing individuals who challenge those in positions of power.
The human rights organization maintained that no individual or political authority had the right to use violence to intimidate, punish or suppress people expressing opposing political views.
It warned that the use of violence against dissenting voices undermined democracy and promoted a culture in which political privileges were protected at the expense of citizens’ fundamental rights.
CEFSAN consequently called on the Nigeria Police Force to commence an immediate, independent, transparent and impartial investigation into the incident.
It also demanded the identification, arrest and prosecution of all individuals involved in planning, sponsoring or executing the attack, irrespective of their political affiliations or connections.
CEFSAN further called for a thorough investigation into allegations of possible involvement by individuals connected to the Ekiti State Government and security agencies.
It urged relevant authorities to secure all available CCTV footage and other evidence to prevent possible destruction, manipulation or concealment.
It also called for adequate security arrangements for Sowore, members of his team and potential witnesses to protect them against further intimidation or attacks.
CEFSAN warned that any attempt to shield those responsible through political interference, official influence or selective justice would further undermine public confidence in democratic institutions.
It urged the Ekiti State Government and the police to demonstrate their commitment to justice by ensuring that everyone implicated in the incident was held accountable.
The rights organisation expressed solidarity with Sowore and other victims of political violence, stressing that the protection of human rights must go hand in hand with the struggle against oppression, exploitation and abuse of state power.
“Dissent is not a crime. Political criticism is not an offence. The people’s right to organise, speak out and resist oppression must be defended,” the statement added.
