The Kano State Police Command has announced the commencement of a statewide public awareness and sensitization campaign on traffic rules ahead of a strict enforcement exercise aimed at reducing road crashes, traffic congestion, and other road-related offences.
In a statement issued on Tuesday by the Command’s spokesperson, CSP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, the Command urged motorists and other road users to strictly comply with traffic laws, warning that violators would be arrested and prosecuted after the sensitization period.
According to the statement, the initiative is designed to curb traffic violations, improve road safety and protect lives and property across Kano State.
The Command commended the Kano State Government for its investment in road infrastructure through the construction and rehabilitation of roads across the state, urging residents to reciprocate by using the facilities responsibly and observing traffic regulations.
The Police said the enforcement exercise would target several traffic offences, including driving without number plates or with covered number plates, driving against traffic, disobeying traffic lights and road signs, speeding, reckless driving, driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, using mobile phones while driving, overloading, illegal parking and obstruction of traffic flow.
Motorists were advised to take advantage of the sensitization period to familiarize themselves with traffic regulations and ensure full compliance before the commencement of full enforcement.
“At the end of the sensitization, offenders will be arrested and prosecuted in accordance with extant regulations,” the statement said.
The Command also called on residents to maintain law and order throughout the exercise.
It reaffirmed the commitment of the Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, to ensuring the safety and security of residents through effective policing.
The statement noted that the initiative aligns with the policing vision of the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, which emphasises people-centred, technology-driven and intelligence-led policing.
The Police further appealed to transport unions, including the National Association of Road Transport Owners (NARTO) and the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), as well as traditional rulers, religious leaders, the media, civil society organizations and other stakeholders to support the campaign.
The Command stressed that road safety is a collective responsibility and urged all road users to obey traffic rules to safeguard lives and property.
