Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has flagged off the distribution of 90,000 bags of subsidized fertilizer to farmers across the state, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to agricultural development in line with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
The fertilizer, transported in 150 trucks, will be distributed across Kano’s 44 local government areas and 484 political wards ahead of the peak of the 2026 wet farming season.
Speaking at the official launch of the distribution exercise, Governor Yusuf described agriculture as a cornerstone of his administration’s development agenda, stressing that sustained investment in the sector remains critical to enhancing food security, creating jobs and improving rural livelihoods.
He said that over the past three years, the state government had implemented several initiatives to revitalize agriculture, including the provision of quality farm inputs, promotion of improved crop production techniques, pest control measures and other interventions aimed at increasing farmers’ productivity.
According to the governor, the consistent supply of subsidized agricultural inputs has led to improved crop yields, lower food prices, increased employment opportunities in rural communities and enhanced food security across the state.
Governor Yusuf disclosed that the 150 trucks contain a total of 90,000 bags of fertilizer, which will be equitably shared among the 44 local government areas before distribution to all 484 wards.
He explained that each local government area would receive an average of three truckloads, while each ward had been allocated fertilizer for 70 beneficiaries to ensure that genuine farmers across the state benefit from the intervention.
The governor further revealed that although a bag of fertilizer currently sells for about N50,000 in the open market, the state government, in collaboration with the 44 local government councils, had subsidized the product by 50 per cent, allowing farmers to purchase each bag at N25,000.
He described the initiative as a joint intervention by the state and local governments to ease the financial burden on farmers and support increased agricultural production during the planting season.
To ensure transparency, accountability, and fairness in the distribution process, Governor Yusuf announced the constitution of a state fertilizer distribution committee headed by the Commissioner for Agriculture. Similar committees, he said, have also been established in all 44 local government areas to oversee the exercise.
The governor also commended security agencies in the state for their continued efforts in maintaining peace and supporting government programs, noting that a secure environment remains essential for agricultural and economic development.
