Following reports of attacks on Sahrawi civilians by Moroccan occupation forces in the Agleibat El Fula area and other parts of the liberated Sahrawi territories, as well as a subsequent escalation in military activities, the United Nations has expressed concern over the situation.
On Wednesday, UN Secretary-General’s Deputy Spokesperson, Farhan Haq, said the developments were particularly troubling as they occurred during the visit of the Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy for Western Sahara, Staffan de Mistura, to the region.
The Deputy Spokesperson added that Mr. de Mistura had also expressed concern over these recent events and stressed that such military actions could jeopardize the progress made toward achieving a lasting and mutually acceptable solution to the conflict.
He further emphasized that actions of this nature risk undermining ongoing diplomatic efforts aimed at advancing the political process and reaching a peaceful settlement of the dispute.
