The Kano Patriotic Civil Society Coalition Forum (KPCF), representing 371 member organizations, has commended the increasing inclusion of women in the ongoing political parties’ candidate nomination processes ahead of the 2027 general elections in Kano State.
The Forum particularly praised Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for what it described as his administration’s commitment to inclusive governance and promoting women’s participation in politics and leadership.
In a statement issued on Monday by the Forum’s conveners, Hassan Ibrahim Gama, Mustapha Muhammed Chiroma, and Peter Hassan Tijjani, the group described the emergence of a female candidate for the Kano State House of Assembly from Ghari/Tsanyawa Constituency as a historic milestone in the state’s political development.
According to the Forum, it is the first time a major political party in Kano State has nominated a woman to contest for a State Assembly seat.
KPCF noted that the development reflects progress toward strengthening inclusive governance, gender equality, and democratic participation in the state.
The Forum stated that women remain critical stakeholders in nation-building and that their participation in leadership and decision-making processes would contribute significantly to good governance and sustainable development.
While applauding the growing inclusion of women, the Forum called on political parties in Kano State and across the country to also create more opportunities for Persons With Disabilities (PWDs) during party primaries and candidate selection processes.
The Forum expressed concern over what it described as the continued exclusion and underrepresentation of PWDs in political spaces despite their constitutional rights and contributions to national development.
KPCF urged political parties to adopt affirmative measures capable of guaranteeing fair participation and representation for persons living with disabilities at all levels of the electoral process.
It maintained that inclusive political participation would allow marginalized groups to contribute meaningfully to governance and national development.
The Forum further stressed that a democracy that accommodates women, youths, PWDs, and other vulnerable groups would be more accountable, responsive, and sustainable.
It also urged political parties to institutionalize inclusive policies, ensure transparent and non-discriminatory candidate selection processes, and intensify advocacy for inclusive governance.
KPCF reaffirmed its commitment to promoting inclusive democracy, social justice, and equal political participation for all citizens.
