Kano State Government has pledged full support for a massive 56-day voter registration awareness campaign targeting over 6.8 million eligible but unregistered citizens across the state.
The commitment was made when Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, Chairman of the Taskforce Committee on Voter Mobilization and Awareness Campaign and Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, received a high-powered delegation from the Quadripartite Alliance for Voter Registration in Kano State on Friday.
The delegation was led by Comrade (Dr.) Yahaya Danjuma Yusuf, Director General of the International Peace and Secure Society (IPSS), who presented the Alliance’s operational report and readiness plan for the state-wide voter mobilization effort.
During the meeting held at the Commissioner’s office, Dr. Yusuf disclosed that the Quadripartite Alliance is fully prepared for the campaign scheduled to cover all 44 Local Government Areas and 484 political wards of Kano State.
He said more than 1,452 ward volunteers, 88 local government coordinators, 22 zonal directors and over 200,000 trained community mobilizers have already been deployed to begin operations.
He noted that the Alliance draws strength from its two-decade history of grassroots mobilization and collaboration with various ministries and agencies of the Kano State Government.
He added that despite limited resources, earlier pilot phases of the campaign successfully supported thousands of residents through the INEC pre-registration process.
Dr. Yusuf praised Commissioner Waiya for what he called “responsive leadership and rare humility,” stressing that the partnership between the Taskforce Committee and the Alliance represents a “progressive model of government–civil society collaboration.”
He acknowledged the government’s support in terms of logistics, transport and coordination, describing it as a major boost to civic participation in the state.
The Alliance also paid tribute to its volunteers and community partners, many of whom are beneficiaries of empowerment initiatives such as the Kwankwaso Community Empowerment Program supported by the Ministry of Science and Technology.
Dr. Yusuf said their dedication during voter sensitization, especially in areas with heavy turnout like Garun Malam, demonstrated “selfless patriotism worthy of national recognition.”
The event also featured the formal presentation of an award earlier received by Dr. Yusuf on behalf of Commissioner Waiya from the War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) Kano Command.
The award, which recognized the Commissioner’s contribution to peace and civic enlightenment, was personally presented back to him by Dr. Yusuf.
In his remarks, Waiya dedicated the honour to Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, noting that “leadership is about service, inclusion and empowering citizens to participate in governance.”
Responding further, the Commissioner commended the Quadripartite Alliance for its “unprecedented grassroots reach and professional coordination” and assured that the Kano State Taskforce would work closely with the Alliance to achieve mass voter turnout ahead of upcoming elections.
“We are not just mobilizing voters, we are strengthening democracy. Kano will lead the way in citizen participation,” he said.
The meeting ended with a reaffirmation of partnership between the Taskforce and the Alliance to drive voter education and registration during the 56-day campaign, which begins soon across Kano State.
