An overwhelming flash flood has wreaked havoc in Dandi and Suru Local Government Areas of Kebbi State, destroying two bridges, submerging farmlands, and leaving several homes in ruins.
The disaster, which struck on Thursday, led to the collapse of a bridge in Fana township and another along the Dakingari–Kyangakwai road. Vast farmlands and residential houses across the affected communities were also swept away.
Deputy Governor of Kebbi State, Senator Umar Abubakar Tafida, visited the disaster zones on Saturday to commiserate with victims in Fana, Aljannare, and Kampani villages spanning Dandi, Suru, and Argungu LGAs.
He conveyed the government’s condolences and presented relief materials and financial support worth N70 million to the affected households.
The state government’s intervention included ₦50 million and 600 bags of rice for victims in Fana, Maigwaza, and Tungar Beddi (Dandi LGA); N10 million and 250 bags of rice for Aljannare (Suru LGA); and N10 million with 250 bags of rice for Kampani village (Argungu LGA).
An additional N10 million and 250 bags of rice were later donated to displaced persons at the Kamfani IDP camp in Argungu.
Senator Tafida assured residents that the collapsed bridges would be reconstructed, while pledging the administration’s continued support for affected communities.
He urged those living in flood-prone riverine areas to relocate to higher ground for safety, praying for divine protection against future disasters.
Local leaders, including the Chairman of Dandi LGA, Mansur Isah, and the member representing Dandi Constituency, Hon. Sulaiman Abubakar, expressed appreciation for the swift government response.
Isah disclosed that one person lost their life in the tragedy, while hundreds of homes and farms were submerged.
Also, the Chairman of Suru LGA, Muhammad Suru, lauded Governor Nasir Idris’s administration for its prompt intervention and pledged continued support to the government.
