Nasarawa State has officially become the 12th Nigerian state to assume regulatory control over its electricity market, in line with the provisions of the Electricity Act 2023.
The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) announced the development in a statement released via X on Saturday.
This transition follows NERC’s formal transfer of regulatory oversight to the Nasarawa State Electricity Regulatory Commission (NASERC), in accordance with the amended Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the Electricity Act 2023 (Amended).
As part of the transition, NERC has directed the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) to establish a subsidiary dedicated to the intrastate supply and distribution of electricity within Nasarawa State. The company is expected to comply with this directive within 60 days, beginning from August 4, 2025.
“All transfers envisaged by the order must be completed by February 3, 2026,” NERC stated.
Prior to Nasarawa, NERC had handed over electricity market regulatory powers to Edo, Ekiti, Enugu, Imo, Kogi, Lagos, Niger, Ogun, Ondo, and Oyo States.
The Commission further revealed that Plateau State will receive full regulatory control on September 12, 2025, while it has received readiness notices from Abia and Delta States.
