In a decisive move to combat rising phone snatching, drug abuse, political thuggery, and other crimes across Kano State, the Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, has reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to partnering with Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) to restore security and social order.

Speaking on Monday at a one-day stakeholders’ engagement with CSOs held at Mambayya House, Waiya unveiled a new strategic initiative, the “Safe Corridor”, designed to address the root causes of insecurity and youth restiveness in Kano.

“The government recognizes that sustainable solutions lie in inclusive dialogue and collaboration, which is why we are engaging civil society actors who work directly with communities and understand their challenges,” Waiya stated.

The event gathered over 75 CSOs, who identified key factors fueling insecurity, including family breakdown, weakened parental responsibility, youth unemployment, drug abuse, cultural decline, weakened community vigilance, and lapses in law enforcement.

To address these issues, the participants recommended practical interventions such as family reorientation programs, revitalization of rehabilitation centres, establishment of toll-free hotlines for anonymous crime reporting, intelligence-driven security operations, and community-focused awareness campaigns using local media, drama, and religious platforms to promote moral values.

Earlier, the Acting Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Inuwa Idris Yakasai, emphasized the urgency of the engagement, citing the alarming rise in violent youth crimes disrupting public safety, school attendance, and economic activities.

“We are here not to apportion blame but to collectively craft sustainable, community-based solutions,” Yakasai said.

The Kano State Government, under Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, reiterated its readiness to work hand-in-hand with CSOs to safeguard the future of Kano’s youth and restore public confidence.
