The Nasarawa State Government has pledged to combat climate change through an ambitious urban greening initiative aimed at revitalizing the State’s ecological landscape.
Princess Margaret Itake Elayo, Commissioner of Environment and Natural Resources, made the pledge at the ceremonial planting of trees in Lafia as part of the ongoing Urban Greening Drive.
The initiative seeks to transform the environment and enhance the aesthetic and ecological quality of the state.
“Historically, humans have contributed to biodiversity by spreading plant seeds through consumption and movement. Today, our role carries the vital duty of providing CO2 for photosynthesis, helping sustain the very air we breathe,” she explained.
Recognizing the pressing need for greener spaces, the Commissioner expressed concern over Lafia’s current lack of greenery and called for urgent action to bolster tree planting efforts.
“Trees and plants are essential as they absorb carbon-dioxide and release oxygen, enhancing air quality and contributing to climate change mitigation,” she stated.
Underscoring the importance of unity in combating ecological challenges, Ms Elayo asserted, “We must be relentless in our fight against the cankerworm that threatens our ecological balance.”
She encouraged the residents of Nasarawa State to rally around the renewed mission of the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, urging collective action to address human activities that contribute to environmental degradation.
