In a sweeping reform of the tertiary education sector, Sokoto State Governor, Ahmed Aliyu, has approved the reconstitution of governing councils for all state owned tertiary institutions and appointed Muhammad Hamim Nuhu Sanusi Emir of Dutse as Chancellor of Sokoto State University.
The appointments, which take immediate effect, are part of the administration’s broader agenda to strengthen institutional governance, improve academic standards and enhance the overall quality of higher education across the state.
The move affects major tertiary institutions, including the College of Nursing and Midwifery, Umaru Ali Shinkafi Polytechnic, Shehu Shagari College of Education and Shehu Shagari University of Education, among others.
Also covered by the exercise are the College of Agriculture, Wurno; Sultan Abdulrahman College of Health Technology, Gwadabawa; the College of Legal and Islamic Studies; and the College of Nursing Sciences, Tambuwal.
Government officials said the reconstitution of the councils is aimed at providing strategic leadership, strengthening accountability mechanisms and ensuring effective implementation of policies designed to drive institutional growth and excellence.
According to a statement issued by the Director-General of Media and Publicity to the Governor, Abubakar Bawa, Yusha’u Kebbe has been appointed Chairman of the Governing Council of the College of Nursing and Midwifery.
The statement further announced the appointment of Prof. Aminu Salihu Mikailu as Chairman of the Governing Council of Umaru Ali Shinkafi Polytechnic, while Ambassador Sahabi Isa Gada will chair the Governing Council of Shehu Shagari College of Education.
Similarly, Prof. G. V. Ardo was named Chairman of the Governing Council of Shehu Shagari University of Education, a key institution responsible for teacher education and professional development in the state.
For the agricultural and health technology institutions, Yusuf Jega was appointed Chairman of the Governing Council of the College of Agriculture, Wurno, while Alhaji Yusuf Muhammad Goronyo will head the Governing Council of Sultan Abdulrahman College of Health Technology, Gwadabawa.
In the legal and professional education sector, Justice Ladan Buda Tsamiya was appointed Chairman of the Governing Council of the College of Legal and Islamic Studies, while Prof. Hamza Muhammad Maishanu will serve as Chairman of the Governing Council of the College of Nursing Sciences, Tambuwal.
The newly constituted governing councils comprise academics, government representatives, members of relevant professional bodies and principal officers of the institutions, reflecting a broad based approach to institutional administration and oversight.
Their mandate includes providing policy direction, ensuring prudent management of resources, promoting academic excellence and supporting sustainable development within their respective institutions.
The appointment of the Emir of Dutse as Chancellor of Sokoto State University is expected to further strengthen the institution’s leadership structure and enhance its profile within Nigeria’s higher education landscape.
Governor Aliyu expressed confidence that the new governing councils and the university chancellor would bring renewed vision, efficiency and accountability to the tertiary education sector, positioning Sokoto State to produce the skilled workforce and human capital required for sustainable socio economic development.
The latest appointments underscore the state government’s commitment to educational reform and institutional strengthening as part of ongoing efforts to improve learning outcomes, expand access to quality education and align tertiary institutions with national development priorities.
