The Sokoto State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), in collaboration with the European Union (EU) and UNICEF, has intensified advocacy for child-centred education, emphasizing that play remains a powerful tool for learning, creativity, and the holistic development of every child.

The renewed commitment was highlighted during the 2026 International Day of Play celebration held at Yahaya Abdulkarim Model Primary School, Sokoto, where education stakeholders, development partners, government officials, teachers, and pupils gathered to mark the global event.

Participants described play as a fundamental right of every child and a critical component of quality education, stressing that effective learning extends beyond traditional classroom instruction.

Speakers at the event noted that play-based learning enhances cognitive growth, emotional intelligence, social interaction, and problem-solving abilities, making it an indispensable element of modern education systems.

They called on governments, schools, parents, and community leaders to create safe and inclusive environments where children can freely explore, interact, and develop their talents through structured and recreational activities.

According to the stakeholders, investing in child friendly learning spaces is vital to improving educational outcomes and preparing children for future challenges in an increasingly competitive world.

The celebration featured a variety of recreational and interactive activities designed to encourage teamwork, innovation, leadership, and active participation among pupils.

The school premises came alive with excitement as children engaged in games, music, cultural displays, and entertainment sessions, creating an atmosphere of joy and enthusiasm.

Guests at the event commended the pupils for their energy and participation, noting that such engagements help build confidence, strengthen social bonds, and promote positive learning experiences.

Cultural performances and interactive sessions also provided opportunities for children to showcase their abilities while fostering friendship, cooperation, and mutual respect among their peers.

Stakeholders used the occasion to reinforce advocacy for children’s rights, particularly the right to education, recreation, protection, and a supportive environment that enables them to thrive.

They further reaffirmed their commitment to advancing policies and programmes that place children at the centre of educational planning and development initiatives across the state.

The event concluded with a strong pledge by SUBEB, the European Union, and UNICEF to continue promoting innovative, child-friendly educational approaches aimed at ensuring that every child in Sokoto State enjoys the opportunity to learn, grow, and succeed through the power of play.
