The Ogun State House of Assembly has passed a bill providing a legal framework for the safe termination of pregnancy under specified legal indications, as part of efforts to reduce maternal morbidity and mortality and promote reproductive health.
The bill, titled “H.B. No. 036/OG/2026 – Ogun State Safe Termination of Pregnancy Law, 2026,” was passed on Thursday during plenary presided over by the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Oludaisi Elemide, at the Assembly Complex, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.
The passage followed the presentation of the report of the House Committee on Health by its Chairman, Hon. Wahab Haruna. The report was adopted after a motion moved by Haruna and seconded by the Chief Whip, Hon. Omobola Bakare.
The bill was subsequently considered and adopted clause-by-clause by the Committee of the Whole House.
For the third reading, Hon. Babatunde Tella moved the motion, which was seconded by Hon. Lukman Adeleye and unanimously supported by the lawmakers through a voice vote.
The Clerk and Head of Legislative Service, Mr Sakiru Adabakin, thereafter read the bill for the third time before the House.
Speaker Elemide directed that a clean copy of the bill be transmitted to Governor Dapo Abiodun for his assent.
Meanwhile, four other bills scaled first reading during the plenary.
They are the Gender Balance in Political and Public Offices Bill, 2026; Group Liability for Offences of Violence, Extortion and Secret Societies (GLOVES) Bill, 2026; Victims’ Rights Bill, 2026; and Ogun State Human Sacrifice Prevention and Prohibition Bill, 2026.
In another development, the 10th Assembly resolved to convert the removal from office of a former Deputy Speaker of the 9th Legislature, Hon. Dare Kadiri, to resignation.
The decision followed consideration of an appeal submitted by Kadiri seeking the conversion of his impeachment and removal as Deputy Speaker to voluntary resignation.
Presenting the report of the Committee of the Whole House, the Chief Whip, Hon. Omobola Bakare, said the committee considered the appeal at its sitting on August 18, 2026.
The committee noted that Kadiri’s request was not intended to reopen the circumstances surrounding his impeachment, apportion blame, engage in political arguments or establish his innocence over the issues that led to his removal.
Rather, the report stated that the former lawmaker sought to bring that chapter of his public service to a “peaceful and dignified conclusion.”
The report was adopted following a motion moved by Bakare and seconded by Hon. Bisi Oyedele, with lawmakers supporting it through a voice vote.
