The Kano State Ministry of Education, in collaboration with Phemia Consults and Integrated Services, has commenced a two-day training program on Emotional and Character Development for students and teachers drawn from various secondary schools across the state.

The Director of Public Enlightenment, Musbahu Aminu Yakasai, disclosed in a statement on Thursday.

Declaring the training open, the Commissioner for Education, Gwani Dr. Ali Haruna Abubakar Makoda, who was represented by the Director of Schools, Comrade Sagir Umar Danbare, said the program was designed to equip participants with essential life skills that would enhance emotional intelligence, positive behaviour, discipline, resilience, and responsible decision-making.

He noted that academic excellence alone is not sufficient for the holistic development of learners, stressing that emotional stability and good character are indispensable qualities for achieving personal success and contributing positively to society.

The Commissioner commended Phemia Consults and Integrated Services for partnering with the Ministry to organise the training and urged participants to actively engage in the sessions and apply the knowledge gained in their schools and daily lives.

The training was facilitated by Mrs. Nkechi Nwodo of Phemia Consults and Integrated Services, who took participants through practical sessions on emotional intelligence, self-awareness, self-control, empathy, effective communication, leadership, conflict resolution, and character building.

Mrs. Nwodo explained that developing emotional competence and positive character among young people and educators would foster healthier relationships, improve learning outcomes, and create a more conducive school environment.

A total of 300 students from various secondary schools across Kano State participated in the first day of the training, while the second day is dedicated to 100 teachers, who will be equipped with practical strategies for nurturing emotional and character development among learners.

The program reflects the State Ministry of Education’s commitment to complement academic instruction with values-based education, in line with Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s vision for the administration to produce morally upright, emotionally balanced, and academically excellent future leaders.
