Kano State Government has inaugurated the State Data and National Education Management Information System (DNEMIS) Coordination Unit as part of efforts to improve education data management and promote evidence-based planning across the sector.
The Commissioner for Education, Dr. Ali Haruna Abubakar Makoda, inaugurated the committee and presented its Terms of Reference, stating that the unit would coordinate the implementation of the Data and National Education Management Information System (DNEMIS) in line with the Federal Ministry of Education’s directive.
Makoda urged members to carry out their responsibilities diligently to ensure the availability of accurate, credible, and timely education data for effective policy formulation, planning, monitoring, and resource allocation.
Speaking earlier, the Deputy Director of the Education Management Information System (EMIS) in the Ministry of Education, Naziru Surajo, who represented the Director of Planning, Research and Statistics, outlined the objectives of DNEMIS and explained that all states had been directed by the Federal Ministry of Education to establish coordination units to strengthen education data management nationwide.
He also briefed the committee on the progress of the 2025/2026 Annual School Census (ASC) in Kano State, highlighting achievements in data entry and school coverage while identifying gaps requiring greater collaboration among stakeholders to ensure the successful completion of the exercise.
The committee is chaired by the Statistician-General of the Kano State Bureau of Statistics, Dr. Sirajo Sulaiman, with representatives from the Ministry of Education, State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Private and Voluntary Institutions Management Board (PVIMB), private schools, and the School-Based Management Committee (SBMC).
The inauguration marks another milestone in Kano State’s drive to institutionalise a robust education management information system capable of providing reliable data to support planning, monitoring, policy implementation, and improved education service delivery.
