On Monday, Kaugama Local Government Council in Jigawa State inaugurated a 17-member committee on a Food Bank to enhance nutritional food in the area.
The program is designed to boost nutrition and fight malnutrition affecting pregnant women, lactating mothers, and children suffering from severe malnutrition in the area.
The Primary Health Care Manager, Abdu Aliyu Karkarna, said, “Kaugama Local Government is among the local governments selected for the trial of the program in the state.”
He further said the program will reduce malnutrition among pregnant women, lactating mothers, and children diagnosed with malnutrition.
Karkarna urged lactating mothers to ensure they breastfeed their newborn babies exclusively from delivery up to 6 months to shield them from diseases.
In his speech, the Local Government Focal Person on Nutrition, Ibrahim Muhammad, said pregnant women visiting health facilities for antenatal care, as well as children and lactating mothers, are the beneficiaries of the program if found to be malnourished.
Speaking on the importance of breastfeeding, the Chief Imam of Kaugama, Malam Nura, urged lactating mothers to breastfeed their babies as it enhances the health of the children by improving brilliance, closeness between mother and newborn baby, as well as increasing energy.
While inaugurating the committee, the Council Chairman of Kaugama, ably represented by Umar Magaji Kaugama, read the names of the members of the committee and pledged to provide the site for the Food Bank.
