A coalition of civil society organizations (CSOs), professional bodies, and security agencies has called for the establishment of a comprehensive legal framework to regulate property transactions in Kano State.

The call was made during an advocacy visit by the Know Your Neighbour Community Development Initiative (KYNCDI), in collaboration with the Kano State District Head Forum, the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Ungogo Branch, the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Kano, Kano Online Media platforms, and other community-based and civil society organizations, to the State Commissioner for Justice, Barr. Abdulkarim Kabiru Maude, SAN.

Others are representatives of key government and security agencies such as the National Orientation Agency (NOA), Kano State Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission (KPADA), the Nigerian Police, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), the Nigeria Immigration Service, and the Department of State Services (DSS).

During the visit, the KYNCDI advocated the introduction of a robust legal framework to regulate the renting and sale of houses in the state, noting that such a policy would enhance transparency, improve security, protect the rights of tenants and property owners, and promote a more structured housing system.

They stressed the urgent need to address existing challenges in property transactions, including disputes and a lack of accountability, through clear and enforceable regulations.

Responding, the Commissioner for Justice, Barr. Maude, SAN, acknowledged the importance of the proposal and assured the delegation of the government’s openness to constructive reforms.

He emphasized the need for sustained collaboration among stakeholders, urging continued engagement to ensure inclusiveness, broaden consultation, and develop effective, practical policies for the state.
