Yobe State Governor, Mai Mala Buni, has described four federal roads in the state as death traps and growing security threats due to their poor condition.

The affected roads are located in Gulani and Geidam Local Government Areas, including the Geidam-Maine/Sorowa road that connects to the border with the Niger Republic.

Governor Buni made the declaration during a meeting with members of the House of Representatives Committee on the Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA), led by Hon. Aderemi Abasi Iseni, at the Government House in Damaturu over the weekend.

He expressed concern over the deteriorating state of the roads, saying they pose serious dangers to motorists and commuters in the region.

According to him, the damaged roads force vehicles to slow down or stop, increasing the risk of mechanical breakdown and exposing passengers to terrorist attacks.

Buni warned that the current state of the roads has made them easy targets for Boko Haram and Islamic State of West African Province (ISWAP) insurgents, as well as other criminal elements operating in the area.

He emphasized that road rehabilitation must go beyond mere pothole repairs and called for full reconstruction of the affected routes to improve safety and security.

The governor said that rehabilitating these roads would complement the Federal Government’s broader efforts to strengthen transport infrastructure and reinforce security across the state.

Responding to the concerns, Hon. Iseni said the House Committee was in Yobe as part of its regional oversight and assessment tour across the country.

He assured that the identified roads would be considered in FERMA’s upcoming intervention programmes, aimed at addressing critical infrastructure gaps.
