The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), branches of Academic Staff Union of Universities at Sokoto State University (SSU) and Shehu Shagari University of Education (SSUES), have expressed appreciation to the Sokoto State Government for approving the implementation of a 40 per cent Consolidated Academic Allowance (CATA) for academic staff of the two state-owned universities.

In a statement jointly issued to newsmen in Sokoto by Dr. Bello Musa, Chairperson of ASUU-SSU, and Dr. Shamsudeen Kabir, Chairperson of ASUU-SSUES, the union lauded the administration of Ahmad Aliyu Sokoto for what it described as a landmark achievement in the advancement of higher education in the state.

According to the statement, Sokoto has become the first state in the North-West region to approve the implementation of the ASUU-Federal Government Agreement reached in December 2025.

ASUU specifically commended the state government for approving a 40 per cent increment in academic allowances, the payment of Earned Academic Allowance (EAA) covering two academic sessions, and the constitution of the Governing Council for Shehu Shagari University of Education, Sokoto.

The Union also noted that the approvals reflect the governor’s commitment to improving the welfare of academic staff and strengthening the education sector in the state.

“These landmark achievements clearly demonstrate His Excellency’s unwavering commitment to the advancement of higher education in Sokoto State.

“We once again thank His Excellency for his exemplary leadership and steadfast commitment to the development of education in Sokoto State,” the statement said.

While expressing gratitude for the approvals, the union appealed to the government to give favourable consideration to other outstanding claims affecting its members.

Among the pending issues highlighted were unpaid third-party deductions, including cooperative and union check-off dues that have remained unsettled for several months.

The union also called for the payment of promotion arrears covering seven academic sessions, as well as arrears arising from the 25 per cent and 35 per cent salary adjustments for a 14-month period spanning January 2024 to February 2025.

ASUU expressed optimism that the state government would address the outstanding issues in the spirit of the ongoing efforts to enhance the welfare of university staff and promote quality education in Sokoto State.
