The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has announced the selection of former Minister of Transportation, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, as its vice-presidential candidate for the 2027 general elections.
Announcing the decision, ADC National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, said Amaechi’s emergence followed broad consultations within the party and reflected his strong performance as runner-up in the party’s presidential primaries as well as his track record of service to his State and the country.
The party said the choice of Amaechi came after the conclusion of its presidential primaries, where he emerged as the runner-up, a result it described as evidence of his wide acceptance within the party and his continued relevance in national politics.
The announcement effectively confirms a presidential ticket pairing between former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Amaechi, a combination the ADC described as a strategic alliance aimed at addressing Nigeria’s governance, economic, and security challenges.
According to the party, the joint ticket brings together two experienced politicians with deep roots in public administration and governance, capable of repositioning the country for what it called “a new era of prosperity, security, and inclusive development.”
Amaechi’s political career spans several decades and multiple levels of governance. He served as Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, where he became one of the longest-serving legislative leaders in Nigeria’s Fourth Republic.
He later served two terms as Governor of Rivers State, during which he oversaw major investments in infrastructure, education, healthcare, and public sector reforms.
At the federal level, he was Minister of Transportation, where he led key rail and transport modernization projects.
The ADC said his experience across both legislative and executive arms of government makes him a valuable asset to the proposed administration, particularly in strengthening governance from the outset.
The party also highlighted what it described as Amaechi’s political influence in the South-South and across southern Nigeria, as well as his ability to build coalitions across regional and political divides.
It added that the Atiku-Amaechi ticket represents a “national partnership” that bridges regions, generations, and political traditions, offering Nigerians a credible alternative capable of restoring public confidence and driving national development.
At a time of widespread public concern over economic hardship, insecurity, and unemployment, the ADC said the alliance signals its readiness to govern and deliver practical solutions to Nigeria’s challenges.
The party called on members, coalition partners, civil society organizations, youth and women groups, and Nigerians at large to support the joint ticket as part of a broader effort to rebuild the nation.
