Sokoto SWAN Gets New Executives

The National President of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Isaiah Benjamin, has urged members to embrace professionalism, and discipline and work in unity and collaboration.

Speaking during the inauguration of the new leadership of SWAN Sokoto State Chapter, Mr. Benjamin said journalism is a noble profession and practitioners should strive to uphold its tenets.

The President, represented by the Vice President Northwest of the Association, Comrade Kabiru Idris Gobirawa, advised members to register with the national secretariat to authenticate their membership.

He also advised the new SWAN leadership in Sokoto to familiarize itself with the Union’s constitution to avoid working in contrast with its provisions.

Gobirawa advised the new Leadership to work with all sports stakeholders in the state with particular mention of the state Ministry of Youth and Sports, the State Football Association, the Nigeria Press Council, and other relevant bodies.

Earlier, the Chairman Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Sokoto State Council, Dalhaltu Abdullahi, admonished the new SWAN leadership to work in unity and carry all members in running the affairs chapter.

He charged them to revive and promote sporting activities in the state and among the NUJ so as to ensure harmony among practicing journalists in the state.

Also speaking, the Chairman of the Credential Screening Committee of the 2024 NUJ election in Sokoto, Shehu Jatau, appealed to journalists to unite and promote the ideal of the profession.

He said journalism is a noble profession and practitioners should not present it in a negative light through attitudes and behavior that are unbecoming of the profession.

He maintained that peace is essential for the attainment of progress and appealed to NUJ members to ensure the peaceful conduct of the forthcoming council election.

The General Manager of Vision FM, Muhammad Nasir, charged the new SWAN leadership to revive sporting events within the council and lead SWAN with dedication and determination to achieve better results.

While reading his acceptance speech, the newly sworn-in chairman of SWAN in Sokoto Umar Ahmed Kware appreciated the NUJ council chairman for his efforts toward reviving SWAN in Sokoto

He appreciated the contribution of all stakeholders who stood to ensure the association was revived, which led to the inauguration of the new leadership of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria SWAN in Sokoto.

Kware said his leadership would work with the team of qualified journalists to restore the dignity of the Union and ensure sports get adequate coverage and promotion.

Those to be inaugurated are Umar Ahmed Kware, Vision FM (Chairman), Nasiru Suleiman, Arise TV (Vice Chairman), and Adeniyi Olugbemi of Leadership is to serve as the Secretary.

The rest includes Aminu Abubakar Zaki from The Path Newspaper, (Treasure), Bilyaminu Bello, RTV Sokoto, (Assistant Secretary) Nasir Bello Mai Shinkafa, and Hassan Altine Shuni from Rima Radio who emerge as Financial Secretary and Welfare Officer.
