Nigeria wrapped up an outstanding campaign at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, finishing seventh on the final medals table with 24 medals to emerge as Africa’s highest-ranked nation at the competition.
Team Nigeria won 10 gold, seven silver and seven bronze medals, securing a place among the top 10 countries at the Games. The final standings were confirmed on the official Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games X handle after the conclusion of events on Sunday.
Nigeria’s campaign began on a winning note with Esther Nworgu claiming the country’s first gold medal in the women’s lightweight para powerlifting event.
The gold medal winners also included Ezekiel Nathaniel in the men’s 400m hurdles, Goodness Nwachukwu, who set a new world record in the women’s F42 discus throw, Idris Riluwan in the men’s para powerlifting event, and Chukwuebuka Enekwechi, who made history by winning the men’s shot put title.
Despite battling injury, sprint hurdler Tobi Amusan added to Nigeria’s medal tally with a bronze medal in the women’s 100m hurdles.
Australia finished as overall champions with a dominant haul of 171 medals comprising 70 gold, 45 silver and 56 bronze.
England placed second with 110 medals (29 gold, 45 silver and 36 bronze), while Canada came third with 62 medals, including 19 gold, 20 silver and 23 bronze.
India and hosts Scotland completed the top five with 39 medals each, although India edged Scotland by virtue of a higher silver medal count. New Zealand finished sixth with 36 medals (10 gold, 14 silver and 12 bronze), one place ahead of Nigeria.
Jamaica occupied eighth position with 19 medals, Wales finished ninth with 31 medals, while Malaysia completed the top 10 with 16 medals.
South Africa ended the Games in 11th place with 28 medals (seven gold, 11 silver and 10 bronze), followed by Northern Ireland in 12th with 16 medals. Kenya placed 13th with 12 medals, while Cyprus also won 12 medals but finished 14th after claiming one gold, five silver and six bronze medals.
Mauritius finished 15th with four medals, while Cameroon placed 16th with five medals.
Jersey, Samoa and Sri Lanka shared 17th position after each won one gold and one silver medal, while Fiji rounded out the top 20 with one gold and one bronze medal.
Among other African countries, Uganda finished 27th with three medals, Namibia placed 29th with three medals, and Ghana ended 30th with two medals. Lesotho and Zambia each secured two bronze medals, while Gabon finished with a solitary bronze medal.
Nigeria’s seventh-place finish underlined one of its strongest Commonwealth Games performances in recent years, with its 10 gold medals ensuring it finished ahead of every other African nation at the Glasgow Games.
