The World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Director for Africa, Dr Mohamed Janabi, says Nigeria currently has no Ebola cases following the medical evacuation of the infected patient and her husband to Switzerland.
In a statement posted on his official X account on Monday, Janabi said Nigeria would continue monitoring 52 contacts of the patient, while Switzerland would take responsibility for her ongoing medical care and monitor her husband, identified as contact number 53.
He said the evacuation took place earlier on Monday, adding that both the patient and her husband were Swiss citizens.
According to Janabi, the patient was clinically stable after Nigerian medical teams successfully managed the acute phase of her illness and stabilised her condition before the evacuation.
He commended the Federal Government, health workers, clinicians, emergency responders and other partners involved in the Ebola response, describing the outcome as a remarkable achievement.
Janabi said the management of the case demonstrated Africa’s expertise, resilience and public health leadership, particularly the importance of cooperation among countries in responding to health emergencies.
Despite the patient’s evacuation, the WHO regional director stressed the need for continued vigilance, urging health authorities to sustain contact tracing, monitoring and other response measures to prevent further transmission.
He reiterated that Nigeria would closely monitor the 52 contacts within its jurisdiction, while Switzerland would provide continued care for the patient and monitor her husband.
The development marks a significant stage in Nigeria’s response to the case, although health authorities are expected to maintain surveillance and other public health measures to guard against possible further transmission.
