Kebbi State Government has raised alarm over the activities of an emerging cybercrime syndicate known as “Yan Vocal” operating in Argungu Local Government Area, vowing to dismantle the network and bring all those involved to justice.
Ahmed Idris, the governor’s spokesperson, disclosed in a statement issued on Sunday, that credible intelligence indicates the criminal syndicate, made up largely of young persons aged between 19 and 24, specialises in hacking social media accounts, creating fake online identities, and using blackmail, threats, and other fraudulent tactics to extort money from unsuspecting victims.
According to the statement, the group primarily targets users of Facebook, WhatsApp, TikTok, and other social media platforms, where members allegedly send explicit content or manipulate video calls and photographs to intimidate victims into making financial payments.
It added that investigations further revealed that the syndicate deliberately targets high-profile individuals, including political office holders, traditional and religious leaders, business executives, and other prominent personalities across Nigeria as well as neighbouring countries such as Niger, Ghana and the Republic of Benin.
The government said preliminary investigations have identified 19 suspected members of the criminal network, while security agencies have uncovered their operational patterns, meeting points, and methods of receiving illicit proceeds through digital financial platforms.
Reaffirming its commitment to protecting residents from cyber-enabled crimes, the Kebbi State Government assured the public that security agencies are actively working to dismantle the syndicate and ensure that those responsible are prosecuted.
“No effort will be spared in ensuring that cybercriminals find no haven anywhere within Kebbi State,” the government stated.
It urged residents to remain vigilant while using social media by safeguarding personal information, avoiding interactions with suspicious online accounts, and promptly reporting cases of cyber extortion or online blackmail to the appropriate security agencies.
The government stressed that cybercrime extends beyond financial losses, noting that it inflicts emotional and psychological trauma, destroys reputations, erodes public trust, and poses an increasing threat to national security.
It added that tackling the menace requires collective vigilance and sustained public awareness.
To strengthen the fight against cybercrime, the government pledged to deepen collaboration among security agencies, financial institutions, telecommunications providers, and community stakeholders, while intensifying public enlightenment campaigns to promote responsible digital behaviour and prevent cyber-related offences.
The Kebbi State Government reiterated its commitment to maintaining law and order and ensuring that the state remains a safe and secure environment for residents, businesses and legitimate digital activities.
