Egypt staged a remarkable second-half comeback to defeat New Zealand 3-1 in their second Group G match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Sunday in Vancouver, Canada.

New Zealand made a bright start and took the lead in the 15th minute through Finn Surman after sustained early pressure on the Egyptian defence.

However, Egypt returned from the break with renewed determination and found the equaliser in the 58th minute when Mostafa Ziko converted to level the scores.

Captain Mohamed Salah then put the Pharaohs ahead in the 67th minute, completing the turnaround and giving Egypt control of the contest.

Substitute Mahmoud Hassan, popularly known as Trézéguet, sealed the victory in the 82nd minute with Egypt’s third goal of the match.

The win sends Egypt to the top of Group G with four points, two ahead of Iran and Belgium, who settled for a goalless draw in the group’s earlier fixture.

New Zealand remain at the bottom of the standings with one point after two matches.
