The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, on Tuesday convened an emergency conference with senior strategic managers of the Nigeria Police Force at the Force Headquarters in Abuja to address pressing national security concerns.

The high-level meeting, attended by members of the Force Management Team, Assistant Inspectors-General of Police, Commissioners of Police, and the media, focused on reinforcing accountability within the Force and outlining operational directives for commands nationwide, the Force spokesperson, DCP Anthony Okon Placid, said in a statement.

In his address, IGP Disu stressed the need for transparency, discipline, and responsible leadership across all levels, noting that Nigeria’s evolving security challenges require a more responsive, intelligence-driven policing strategy.

The IGP also addressed a recent incident in Delta State involving the extra-judicial killing of a suspect, describing the act as unlawful and contrary to the values of the Force.

The Police Boss confirmed that officers implicated in the incident had been dismissed and that the case had been forwarded for criminal prosecution, reiterating a zero-tolerance stance on misconduct.

According to the statement, highlighting operational achievements for April 2026, IGP Disu disclosed that intelligence-led operations led to the arrest of 28 suspected terrorists, 51 murder suspects, 62 armed robbery suspects, 85 kidnapping suspects, and 54 suspected cultists.

He added that 189 kidnapped victims were rescued, while security operatives recovered 140 firearms, 1,074 rounds of ammunition, and 37 stolen vehicles.

As part of ongoing reforms, the IGP announced the establishment of a Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU), a restructured tactical formation aimed at improving response to serious and violent crimes.

He explained that the unit would rely on intelligence-based deployment, specialized training, strict adherence to human rights standards, and clear accountability, with Commissioners of Police directly responsible for oversight.

IGP Disu further directed Commissioners of Police nationwide to strengthen community policing through regular town hall meetings with traditional rulers, religious leaders, and other stakeholders.

He also mandated that police chiefs make their contact details accessible to community leaders to enhance communication and public trust.

Reaffirming the Force’s reform agenda, the IGP said efforts are focused on professionalism, discipline, human rights compliance, and accountability, supported by mechanisms such as the Police Complaints Response Unit.

The Nigeria Police Force, he added, remains committed to improving operational efficiency and safeguarding the rights and security of all Nigerians.
